Hallowell Experience

Hallowell is a pretty top brand here in China, with a big philosophy behind. We went to the casting to meet the head designer and he 'gave us the tour'. He showed us a few video's, he showed us documentaries made on him, he explained his philosophy, we tried on some clothes, and the whole process took around 3 hours. They were only looking for 1 guy and 1 girl. I really liked the brand and philosophy behind. The head designer spoke english he talked to us directly. Finally the most experienced of China models, Tray, had enough. He said, ok 3 hours for a casting is enough. We want to go home. Then the guy started to talk about money with us, and the job, which is kind of wierd. Clients never do that-it's why we have agents. But it's China, so everything is possible! But then the conversation got wierd and he started to say the brand had no money to pay the models but that his brand would make us famous and he'd use our photos world wide. At that point Tray got up and explained about usage rights on our images. We left pretty quickly after that and it was sad. The brand was good-clearly successful, but they were not interested in investing in good photos. Oh and by the way, the guy had a Hummer car downstairs. If they have no money how can they be a top brand in china? Who pays their store electricity? Who pays the parking for the Hummer and the gas? It was so disappointing but it left us all shaking our heads. Would have been so fun to work for that brand-but not for free! I would have loved to make his catalog because his brand philosophy was great-but clearly there's a disconnect somewhere. The model is the smallest part in the budget of a job; the studio and surrounding people far more expensive. I can understand giving young new designers a leg up, or even big campaigns like Prada and other brands use their media power as a bargaining tool when they negotiate the rate. But they always pay something. But as chris anderson said, we are entering a free market economie. Maybe we will all be living on prana?

second job of the day!

The photographer of the day was so satisfied with my work that he recommended me to another client and now i make a second job me the day. Wow! What an excellent way to live out the 2007! Making beautiful photo's, clients all satisfied, and even doing 2 jobs in a day! The year started off to terrible and i lost everything-but 2008 seems to be bringing me luck already. How excellent. I even have a job on 1 Jan. I'll enter the year prosperous. How great! I just hope to have enough energy to make this second job today. Wow.

Eco is Booming

Along with the nokia eco phone there are others jumping into the ring with natural objects that are not only art but using natural materials to enhance technology. These items here are a bit crude and i'm looking forward to the wave me innovation when it hits, but still, i'd enjoy having a usb STICK (literally) in my handbag. The feel of a wooden phone would be pleasing in my hand, and the 'look' would be complete with the eco computer in wood also. Wear some hemp clothing from hempworks, and you'd be chic eco for sure. One up for the planet in style.

Successful shooting? Sign the wall

The photographer was very happy to work with me-he even asked me to sign his wall. I hope they ask me back again. They were delightful to work with. No problem to make the trek to shoot with them again! (have to admit though, so far all the clients save the top one, asked me to sign my name on a paper like an autograph. Not sure why though. They were very adement about it being with a big fat black pen. Strange. Have not figured it out yet why)

All the clothes i have to shoot in 4 hours
All the clothes i have to shoot in 4 hours

All this travel for only 4 hours shoot, and i'm so tired. Everything looks bleak in the morning but i get a big welcome to the studio, they buy me food for breakfast, the makeup artist is good and everything starts to be better. I'm in a mood but the minute i step in front of the camera all my lights go on and i'm in full photo mode. Mood gone and i'm just enjoying the photographer enjoying to make photos with me. It's so much fun, and everything is going well. It's very satisfying to make people happy and to know you are helping them to become more successful. At a certain point you run out of ideas for what you can do to show the clothes but it does not matter. After the art director has to choose the layout. You can only do so much with so many outfits and so little time.

Winter Sparkle
Winter Sparkle

The women and tech issue is pretty strong here in china. I really like how the one magazine shot their covers sporty with laptops and fashion girls, but time focus mag takes the cake as the closest match to 'vogue' style.

With laptops forging the way the pink pc lags a little behind. Popular with the young crowd but the tulip's are on the right track for the working girls. The sparkle mouse somewhere in the winter wonderland.

The Mandarina Duck phone is very chic and well done, even if we do not know what the software is like. The Elle phone is on it's v3 and i think they could do with a make-over.
